In a city like Jaipur there is so much to do, from the usual tourist attractions like City Palace to Amer Fort it’s hard to pick from, so instead, I’m going to tell you about some of my favourite places in Jaipur.
Amer Fort
I’ve been to this 16th century Fort twice now and still love it! It costs 500rs and is around 50 minutes, 11kms from Jaipur. You can easily take an auto or Uber which will set you back between 250 – 300rs one way.
On the way to Amer Fort you must stop off for a few minutes to take in the palace on the lake, known as Jal Mahal. You can make this a brief stop to take a few pictures, there’s even options for camel rides, before it’s on to Amer Fort. It’s a bit of a walk up hill, although you can opt for an elephant ride if you’d prefer and arrive in style. The Fort is breathtaking and easily worth a few hours admiring the architecture and imagining what it was like in its day.
Nearby there is the option of Anokhi block printing museum, entrance is 50rs, to learn all about this ancient art still used to this day. There are some well priced souvenirs in the shop. Close by is an intriguing step well called Panna Meena Ka Kund that is worth stopping and admiring. It’s nestled in a residential area away from the tourist crowds.
Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal is the Palace of the Winds and is a beautiful facade that many tourists come to gaze at. It’s better viewing from the outside as there is less to see inside the building itself. The best and most relaxing view is from one of the rooftop cafes opposite. You have options such as the Wind Cafe or Tattoo Cafe. I often meet friends here as you get to take in the breathtaking view with a lovely mango Lassi before doing some much needed retail shopping in Sireh Deori Bazaar below. Within walking distance you also have Jantar Mantar and City Palace, both key tourist destinations.
Rajminder cinema
Whenever I have friends visiting I always take them to the Rajminder! The famous movie theatre was purpose built in this elegant regal style. Just watching them raise the curtain in this theatrical style is mesmerising! They’ve recently introduced the option of recliner seats to make the whole experience even more enjoyable. It’s the best place to watch and experience a Bollywood movie and see dancing in the aisles! Tickets cost a mere 200rupees but you may want to book in advance as this place is popular.
Lassiwala
Before heading to Rajminder you can try the most delicious Lassi, a hugely popular Indian drink, at Lassiwala. Make sure to go to the most authentic Lassiwala shop, known for its ‘since 1944’ shop sign and 312 sign near the door. There are many imitations around it but this is the best. Get there by 4pm though before it closes. It’s worth a trip here just for this divine yoghurt drink!
Tapri tea house
Jaipur has a real cafe culture and there are so many cafes to choose from, but a popular one amongst friends and tourists is Tapri tea house. Their masala coffee is divine and a twist on the traditional chai masala. They have a roof terrace you can relax on or the option to cool off inside. If you’re after some good Indian food, check out The Peacock or Spice Court, you won’t be disappointed, both serve exceptionally tasty Indian dishes and The Peacock has a great rooftop view for some evening star gazing.
Monkey temple
Wanting to escape the hustle and bustle, then you need to check out the monkey temple! Not only for its panoramic view of Jaipur, but it’s peaceful and tranquil temple setting with plenty of monkeys, just don’t go carrying food! It’s a wonderful way to end the time in Jaipur, watching the sunset on the majestic pink city.
